The Romeo y Julieta marque is named after William Shakespeare’s tragic lovers. The Romeo y Julieta brand dates back to 1875 and is part of the trinity (Cohiba, Romeo y Julieta, Montecristo) of the most famous Cuban brands.
Romeo y Julieta was developed by Inocencio Alvarez and Mannin Garcia. This brand immediately showed its quality by winning gold medals in four universal expositions between 1885 and 1900. But the brand’s popularity became stratospheric once it was acquired by Jose Rodriguez Fernandez, known as “Pepin”, in 1903.
Winston Churchill became a devotee of Romeo y Julieta. Since his visit to Havana in 1946, his name has not only been commemorated on a band but it has also served to describe the marque’s most famous size which measures 7 inches by 47 ring gauge: the Churchill.
